The Gruffalo Trail

Our woodland trail is based on the much loved children's book, The Gruffalo.

Wander with the famous mouse through a series of carved montages depicting the story of the Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson along a short trail that runs alongside the brook. Along the trail you will discover how the mouse gets out of some tricky situations and enjoy the brilliant story, whilst admiring these much-loved character carvings. Come along and enjoy this wonderful story with your family in the beautiful Forest of Dean. We are a woodland site with gravel paths but the trail is easily negotiable for buggies.

Dogs are not allowed on the trail as it is in the Museum grounds, but they are very welcome in the Heritage Coffee Shop, on the balcony and in the gift shop.

The figures were carved by Clayton Ryder, our Site Manager and internationally renowned chainsaw carver. Examples of his work can be seen around the site, and he is regularly seen creating new works of art with his chainsaw in his workshop at the top of our car park.

All New and Improved IN 2023...

The Woodland Play Area

Taking inspiration from our stunning surroundings and with sustainability in mind our Woodland Play Area was upgraded in a big way in 2023. Situated at the end of the Gruffalo Trail, children can enjoy spending time outdoors, making new friends and learning new skills, on the swing, monkey bars, climbing areas, slide and sensory corner.
